Nonsuch Rotary helps The Diamond Riding Centre to Victory

Nonsuch Rotary recently made a donation to The Diamond Riding Centre to help cover their costs for competing at the Disabled Dressage Championships at Hartpury.

The Diamond Centre for Disabled Riders is a registered charity, which provides the opportunity for disabled children and adults to have regular contact with horses. Based in Carshalton, Surrey, it is known and respected world-wide and is the only Centre of its kind in the London Region specialising in all fields of riding for the disabled including dressage, carriage driving, vaulting and hippotherapy.

Three horses and six riders from the Diamond Centre competed at Hartbury and all achieved a place in the top six in every class they entered. In particular Amy Willmott riding Cushia came First in Class 9 - Music and Second in Class 2 and Debbie Rowlanes, also riding Cushia came First in Class 47 - Music.

New Venue for Swimathon 2009

Nonsuch Rotary's annual Swimathon will be held on Saturday 7th November at a new venue.

Following many years support from the Legal & General who provided the use of their Kingswood pool, we are pleased to announce that Epsom College has now offered the use of its superb 25 metre pool on the Epsom College Campus in College Road Epsom. (Follow the Epsom College link above for directions).

Our Swimathon helps local organisations and charities to raise funds for their own purposes as well as supporting Rotary charities. We have aways been well supported by local schools such as Rosebury School in Epsom and Nonsuch High School in Cheam but any local group interested in raising funds is welcome to enter one or more teams.

The idea is simple. Teams collect sponsorship from friends, relatives and supporters for a 30 minute sponsored swim. Nonsuch Rotary, under the leadership of Terry Mayho, organises the event and the proceeds from sponsorship are split 50/50 between the local group and Rotary charities. Last year a total of 28 teams and 119 swimmers swam a total of 3798 lengths which equated to 94.95 kilometers or 59 miles!

Rotary provides all the documentation including sponsorship forms and a certificate upon completion of the swim and free refreshments are available to swimmers.

2009 Nonsuch Big Band Concert A Great Success

The weather stayed good for this year's Nonsuch Big Band in the Park concert featuring The Jay Craig Orchestra supported by The Redhill and Reigate Stompers.

An audiece of over 800 joined us for the concert which this year featured a much improved sound system.

Plans are already underway for the 2010 concert.

Nonsuch Rotarian leads Delegation to Brazil

John Goodhead, a member of Nonsuch Rotary Club, is leading a Group Study Exchange Team to Sao Paulo in Brazil in May.

The Rotary Foundation’s Group Study Exchange (GSE) programme is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for business people and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers. The programme provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits in paired areas of different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's culture and institutions, observe how their vocations are practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

In a typical four-week tour, applicants participate in five full days of vocational visits, 15 to 20 club presentations, 10 to 15 formal visits and social events, two to three days at the district conference, three to four hours per day of cultural and site tours, and three to four hours per day of free time with host families.

For each team member, the Foundation provides the most economical round-trip airline ticket between the home and host countries. Rotarians in the host area provide for meals, lodging, and group travel within their district.

A group from Brazil visited our District 1140 last October and now John will lead a return group who will spend May in Brazil, concluding with the District 2240 Annual Conference.

District 4420 covers the southern part of Sao Paulo and Santos and our group is a single vocational team of young police officers. They will spend the whole of May in Brazil culminating in District 4420’s Annual Conference.

Nonsuch Rotary sponsors local school pupils for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards

Eight pupils from Nonsuch High School for Girls, Carshalton High School for Girls and Carshalton Boys Sports College recently took part in a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) compliments of Nonsuch Rotary.

In total 29 young people from the Rotary District 1140 area spent a weekend at Avon Tyrrell, an activity centre near the village of Burley, in the New Forest, Hampshire.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards is Rotary's leadership training programme for young people. RYLA participants can be ages 14-30, but we usually invite pupils from local secondary schools to enter for an award.

RYLA emphasises leadership, citizenship, and personal growth, and aims to:

Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth

Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders

Encourage leadership of youth by youth

Recognise publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities

Rotary's Highest Award for Chris Forkan

Chris Forkan was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship at Nonsuch Rotary’s annual President’s Ball on Saturday 4th April.

The Paul Harris Fellowship was established by Rotary International in 1957, ten years after the death of founder Paul Harris. It is presented to Rotarians and others in recognition of outstanding service to the community and the club.

Chris Forkan, Nonsuch Rotary’s Youth Officer, has led our youth activities for a number of years. He has built relationships with a number of local schools and has worked tirelessly to fulfil an important Rotary goal of helping young people to maximise their potential. Chris has established Nonsuch Rotary as a leading supporter of youth activities. This includes mock interviews to help students prepare for university and work, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) providing an outward bound style training and development programme for young people, Youth Speaks public speaking competition and Rotary’s Young Chef competition.

The award came as a complete surprise when presented to Chris by President David Riley at the President’s Ball but all members agreed was well deserved.

Carshalton Boys Sports College - Local Winners of Rotary's Youth Speaks

Rotary promotes an annual national public speaking competition for young people and Nonsuch Rotary Club organises the Sutton heat supported by local schools.

This year Carshalton Boys Sports College won the Senior category and Wallington County Grammer School for Boys the Intermediate category.

Carshalton Boys then went on to win the District Semi-Final held on 6th February and will now compete in the District Final held in Staines on 26th February

Ms Lorna Ellis, Head of the Sixth Form at the College, said, " These victories have given a tremendous fillip to the morale of the team and everyone else in the College. We are very proud of them."

Background and Plans for This Year’s Concert

The Rotary Club of Sutton Nonsuch is the newest Rotary Club in the Sutton area (but not that new – we were formed in 1986!). As our name suggests our origins are around the Nonsuch Park area which borders Worcester Park, Cheam, Stoneleigh and Ewell.

A few years ago when we were reviewing our activities one of our members, David Hagger, suggested that as our Club name was directly associated with Nonsuch we should be building relationships with and assisting other organisations associated with Nonsuch. That brought us into contact with The Friends of Nonsuch.

The Friends of Nonsuch is a charity formed in 1991 to fight for the preservation of the Nonsuch Park Estate as an open space accessible to all. Their original very successful campaign highlighted the need for conservation work on the Grade II Listed Georgian Mansion House and since then groups of volunteers have been restoring the Mansion. The Friends also have groups researching the history of the site and are very much concerned with the conservation of the parklands and gardens of Nonsuch Park. The Service Wing Museum was opened to the public in 1993 which details the history of the site and also shows how a working service wing would have looked in the nineteenth century. To finance their restoration work The Friends hold a number of fund raising activities, one of which was a Jazz Concert in the gardens of the Mansion held on a summer’s evening. Nonsuch Rotary approached The Friends with an offer to help organise and grow this event and a partnership was agreed. We would take over the planning and management of the event in return for a share in the profits to support Rotary charities. We first helped in 2007 when the event was upgraded to a Big Band Night featuring The Dave Marrion Big Band. Last year (2008) we took over the complete management of the event and a special committee was set up that included both Club members and members of The Friends of Nonsuch to oversee the organisation.

Despite a wet evening last year there was a very strong turnout and patrons enjoyed a great evening of Big Band Music, again from The Dave Marion Big Band. The early rain soon dried up and the evening finished with many of the audience dancing to the music of Glen Miller and other famous bands from the past.

The event raised much needed funds for The Friends of Nonsuch’s restoration work and also supported Rotary’s nominated charity The Macmillan Butterfly Centre at Epsom Hospital.

Last year we invited sponsorship from local firms to support the event. Dean Kirby’s Creative Flooring was our lead sponsor and others included The IT Partnership , National Counties Building Society, Astral Conservatories, Mantle & Partners Financial Planning & Tax Advisors, Spur Garage Wimbledon, Bond Tours, Banstead Road Garage and Village Ceramics.

This year, 2009 a much bigger and better event is being developed. An improved stage together with a professional sound system is planned together with a change of band. This year the Jay Craig Orchestra will be performing. Led by Jay Craig, BBC Big Band’s baritone sax man, the band was formed in 2004. Its players come together from some of the best bands in the country including the BBC Big Band and the Syd Lawrence and John Wilson Orchestras.

Bill Gates supports Rotary in Polio Eradication Campaign

Whilst most of Nonsuch Rotary’s activities are focused on the local community, Rotary is an international organisation and all clubs also support international activities.

Rotary’s largest initiative is the eradication of polio and over the last twenty years tremendous advances have been made.

In continuing this effort the Gates Foundation announced on 21st January 2009 that it is awarding a $255 million challenge grant to Rotary, which Rotary will match with $100 million raised by its members over the next three years. At the same time, the United Kingdom government is giving an additional $150 million (£100 million) and Germany is giving an additional $130 million (€ 100 million), both to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI).

Launched in 1988, the GPEI - spearheaded by Rotary, the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF - has reduced the number of polio cases by 99 percent over the past two decades, from more than 350,000 cases in 1988 to an estimated 1,600 in 2008.

The GPEI partners will use the new polio eradication funds to support a range of activities, including:

National Immunisation Days, when countries aim to immunise every child under five years old with oral polio vaccine
Supplemental immunisation activities focused on providing extra vaccinations to children in high-risk areas
Research into new vaccines and ways to ensure they are available to vulnerable children
Surveillance activities to detect cases of polio so that progress can be measured and outbreaks contained

Polio has been completely eliminated in the Americas, the Western Pacific and Europe, but the wild polio virus persists in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan, and imported cases from these countries threaten other developing nations. It is in these four countries that the most serious challenges exist, including vaccine effectiveness (India), low vaccination coverage rates (Nigeria), and access problems due to conflict (Afghanistan and Pakistan). Much depends on the countries themselves. Recent progress in key areas has shown that these challenges can be overcome with sufficient national and sub-national commitment.

Rotary Young Chef 2009

The Sutton heat of Rotary’s national annual contest took place at Carshalton College on Saturday 17th January. Organised by Rotarian Chris Forkan, Nonsuch Rotary’s Youth Activities Officer, contestants competed from Cheam High School, Nonsuch High School for Girls and Carshalton College.

Rotary Young Chef is a national competition open to budding young chefs aged 17 or under. They have to cook a healthy three-course meal for two people in two hours with a budget of just £14.

The contest is sponsored by Filippo Berio, the UK's favourite Olive Oil, in conjunction with Rotary and Fifteen London - the restaurant founded by Jamie Oliver.

Now in its ninth year, the Rotary Young Chef Competition was created to give young people across the UK and Ireland the chance to display their creative talents with food, while discovering the importance of healthy eating.

The Rotary Young Chef wins a trip for two to Tuscany to visit Filippo Berio's amazing olive groves and sample the delights of Italian cuisine, as well as being treated to a one-day cookery session in the kitchen of Fifteen London restaurant.

Adam Arfaoui, aged 13 from Cheam High School, won the Sutton round and now goes forward to the District and hopefully the National final.

Contest judge, Matt Burns , Head Chef at The Dom, praised Adam’s performance and commented "The overall standard was very high and the cooking certainly good enough to be served to customers in a restaurant. We were particularly impressed by the professionalism of the students in the kitchen and the serious way they got on with their tasks".

The Mayor of Sutton, Councillor Dr Brendan Hudson, presented Adam with the winner's plaque after adding his own congratulations to him and the other competitors.

The menu chosen by Adam was:

Saute Chicken Breast with Mushroom Sage Sauce and
Asparagus Spears

Chocolate Truffle Pudding and Thick Double Cream

The District final will be held at Merton College on Saturday 21st February and the National Final at North Herts College, Arts Centre, Hitchin, on Saturday 2nd May.

Christmas Collection Cheque Presentation

Following Nonsuch Rotary’s latest Christmas collection five charities received cheques from the Club at a special dinner meeting on 7th January.

The five charities supported were Family Focus, Friends of the Elderly, Linden Bridge School, MERU and Help for Heros. The first four charities were represented at the event and received their cheque from Patsy Payne, Editor of the Sutton and Epsom editions of The Post, our local newspaper.

Introducing the guests, Tony Ensom said, 'These occasions, when money so generously given at Christmas is distributed to a number of charitable organisations set up to help others, are always highlights of Nonsuch Rotary Club's year.'

Each charity gave a brief presentation about their work and what the Club’s donation would be used for.

2009 Bizz Quiz Announced!

The 2009 Bizz Quizz will be held on Tuesday evening 17th February, raising funds for The MacMillan Butterfly Cancer Care Centre at Epsom Hospital.

Commencing at 7.00 p.m. (bar available from 6.00 p.m.) on Tuesday 17th February 2009 at Epsom Conservative Club 39 Church Street Epsom. (Next to the fire station).

The quiz is open to teams of four to six per organisation based in the North Surrey/South London area. Questions will be a mix of general knowledge and current affairs.

Riley's Report - December 2008

Such a lot seems to have happened since my last report so I hope that I don’t forget anyone or anything. If I miss something then please accept my apologies and put it down to another senior moment.

The first thing to report is the successful Swimathon. My thanks and congratulations to Terry Mayho for all his splendid hard work and organisation, I understand that Terry has volunteered for yet another year. Terry you are a star! My thanks and congratulations to all the members, and partners, who helped both before and on the day. My special thanks to the car parking attendants who worked through the cold and rain.

Congratulations and well done to Tony Ensom for an excellent Safari Supper. There were 16 couples who took part and it was a great pleasure to see you all ’chez moi’ for coffee.

On Friday 21st November five of us attended the Wallington Boxing dinner. The evening was a great success and I understand that they raised over £5,000 for charity. The evening was made special for me because my son, Dominic, was asked to present the raffle prizes with the Mayor. When the MC announced that he was recently returned from Afghanistan he was treated to a standing ovation. It just goes to show that the great British public really do appreciate the work done by the armed forces. Whilst on that subject, Dominic would like to thank you all for your encouragement and support during his tour and a special thanks to Julia Mitchell for the scrumptious cakes.

Christmas collection starts on Monday 8th Dec although by the time you read this it will be over.

Finally may I remind you all that Sara and I will be hosting Christmas/New Year drinks and nibbles on Sunday 4th January 2009 from Midday onwards. We look forward to greeting you all and your partners

Nonsuch Rotary’s primary fund raising activity is its Christmas Collection. For the past 22 years Club members have been taking Father Christmas to the streets of Worcester Park, Stoneleigh and Cheam to meet the children and to collect for local charities. Father Christmas also visits the local supermarkets; Waitrose in Worcester Park, Sainsburys in North Cheam and Tesco in Cheam Park Farm.

The collection is very rewarding for its collectors; financially in that much needed funds are raised for local charities, healthy in that walkers get a great deal of pre-Christmas exercise and enjoyable in seeing the pleasure Father Christmas brings to the children he meets on his travels.

But it can be hard on the collectors, walking up to six miles a night in the cold and sometimes wet of December evenings. There is, however, one particular route that all Rotarians look forward to! Since 1986, at one particular house, the home of the Walker family, collectors are met with a tray of silver goblets of sherry and plates of hot mince pies.

Mrs Cherry Walker started this most welcome practice 22 years ago and ever since Nonsuch Rotarians have looked forward to this wonderful custom by a very generous family in which Cherry has been ably supported by her husband Mike and their children.

Saturday 8th November was the day for Nonsuch Rotary's annual Swimathon.

It was an awful day weather wise with strong wind and rain battering Legal & General's offices at Kingswood. Swimmers arrived already wet but ready to swim for their charity and to support The Children's Trust at Tadworth Court and Rotary charities.

Terry Mayho did an excellent job organising both swimmers and club members who were helping. And a particular thanks to three of our team ( John Putland, Ian Hosking and Tony Liston) who spent most of the time in the car park (and the pouring rain) directing swimmers to the pool.

28 teams with 119 swimmers took part and swam a massive 3798 lengths which equates to 94.95 kilometres or 59 miles (so Terry says!)

We were particularly well supported by Rosebery School in Epsom and Nonsuch High School in Cheam and thank the girls and teachers from both schools for their excellent support.

Riley's Report - October 2008

How good it was to see so many of you on 23rd August and how lucky we were with the weather.

My thanks to John C for holding the fort whilst I was away with the family. For those of you who hadn’t noticed that I was away, I had a great 2 weeks in Suffolk the ‘R’ word was not mentioned once but we did see a most splendid fountain in Bury St Edmunds that was installed by the local Rotary Club to mark Rotary’s centenary.

You should all by now have a copy of John P and Malcolm D’s full report, their recommendations will be put before the club by either the October or November business meeting.

We enjoyed meeting the incoming GSE team from Brazil and exchanging banners with them. Despite all John G’s excellent planning, somebody still managed to mess up and we missed two of their members.

We have now presented the dictionaries to the schools and I thank the community service team for all their work, especially Tony E, who not only printed a superb label with the name of each child inside but also sorted them into alphabetical order for each school for ease of distribution.

The next big event is the Christmas collection so make sure that you have empty diaries for the two weeks beginning 6th December, we need your feet on the street. Please don’t make Diego and John M have to go round, cap in hand, asking for volunteers.

Dictionary 4 Life

Nonsuch Rotary is supporting a larger Rotary RIBI (Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland) as part of Rotary’s Literacy Programme. In partnership with Usborne Publishing, RIBI is distributing Usborne’s Dictionary 4 Life to primary school pupils just before they move on to senior school.

This 288 page illustrated dictionary contains 20,000 definitions, 10,000 entries and 1,000 illustrations. It is printed in full colour and acts as a great reference book for all children approaching senior school. As the title suggests, the objective is for the pupils to keep and use the dictionary for life.

Nonsuch Rotary will be distributing 200 of these dictionaries to local schools and the photograph shows President David Riley presenting the first consignment to pupils of Nonsuch Primary School. Other local schools to be supported include Dorchester, and Westbourne Primary Schools. Other Rotary clubs in the area will be supporting other schools in the area.

Nonsuch Rotary Inducts New President

David Riley is Nonsuch Rotary's new president for the year 2008/9. At a special event held on 2nd July, members formally inducted David to his new position. David will lead the Club until the end of June 2009.

Around 800 local residents attended the 2008 Big Band in the Park organised by Nonsuch Rotary Club on behalf of the Friends of Nonsuch.

Despite poor weather conditions during the day the audience defied the rain (which soon stopped after the band started playing!)to picnic in the Nonsuch Park Mansion House Gardens and listen to the music of The Epsom Downs Primary School Steel Band and The Dave Marrion Big Band.

The event, sponsored by Dean Kirby's Creative Flooring, The IT Partnership and The Post raised funds for The Friends of Nonsuch, Macmillan Butterfly Centre and Nonsuch Rotary charities.

Rotary accepts Google's Challenge

Rotary has received a US$3.5 million challenge from the Google foundation to help eradicate polio worldwide.

Google has agreed to match funds raised during the next twelve months up to $3.5 million. This follows a similar contribution from Bill & Melinda Gates' foundation, contributing $100 million to the cause.

Rotary has been working on Polio eradication since 1985 and to date $650 million has been raised and nearly two billion children immunised. Since the project started the number of cases has fallen from 350,000 annually to around 2,000 in 2006.

Nonsuch Rotary, along with the thousands of clubs throughout the world, contribute to this project via the Rotary Foundation. Although the Club directs most of its efforts to local initiatives we are also keen to help Rotary meet its international goals too.

Repeat Success in 2008 Bizz Quizz

Fifteen teams competed for the 2008 Bizz Quizz trophy on Tuesday evening, 19th February.

Held at the Epsom Conservative Club, teams from a number of local organisations competed including Seeability, Legal & General, W S Atkins, Huggins Edwards & Sharpe and Epsom & Ewell Borough Council. But the winner was a repeat success for Sophie Millard Costume Jewellery, last year's victor!

Although a close-run competition organised by Nonsuch Rotary's own Quiz Master, David Riley, Sophie's team managed to take the lead for the second year running.

Based in Kingston upon Thames, Sophie Millard specialises in supplying both vintage and contemporary jewellery for theatrical and film productions.

Bizz Quizz is an annual event organised by Nonsuch Rotary to provide an opportunity for local organisations to meet socially as well as raise funds for local charities. Started in 2006 this is the third contest raising funds, this year, for the McMillan Butterfly Cancer Care Centre at Epsom Hospital.

Bizz Quizz 2008

Nonsuch Rotary's annual Bizz Quizz is being held at Epsom Conservative Club in Epsom on Tuesday 19th February (commencing at 7.00 p.m. - bar available from 6.00 p.m).

The event is open to all local companies and organisations to submit a team of between four to six members to compete for the Bizz Quizz trophy.

Questions are general knowledge and the entry fee of £7.50 includes a hot buffet.

Proceeds to The McMillan Butterfly Cancer Care Centre at Epsom Hospital.

Christmas Collection

During December Nonsuch Rotary collected over £9,000 for local charities. Santa visited the streets of North Cheam, Worcester Park and Stoneleigh and was in attendance at Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Tesco at weekends running up to Christmas.

New Members

Nonsuch Rotary welcomes three new members to the Club.

Peter Stammers describes himself as freelance academic. He lives in Banstead with his wife Jeni and has four daughters.

Following a career in teaching he now trains non-teaching professionals how to train others (i.e. medical consultants to train new doctors, etc.). He also provides training for new school governors in the Surrey area. Peter is Chairman of the Board of Governors of Rosebery School in Epsom.

Tim Tupper lives in Sanderstead with his wife Ann. Following a career in the Civil Service he retired early but is currently actively involved in scouting and the National Trust as a room steward at Winston Churchill’s home, Chartwell.

He is a keen gardener (with an allotment) selling excess vegetables (and Jam made by Ann) in aid of local charities.

Mike Richardson lives in Epsom with his wife Jenny. He serves as a local Councillor for Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and previously worked in local government having a key responsibility for highways in Surrey County Council.

Nonsuch Rotary will be pounding the streets of Cheam, Stoneleigh and Worcester Park this December escorting Father Christmas as he visits the children of the area.

We will also be visiting Tescos North Cheam on Saturday 1st December, Waitrose Worcester Park on Friday 7th and Saturday 8th December and Sainsburys North Cheam on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th December.

2007 Swimathon

The seventh Nonsuch Rotary Swimathon was held at Legal & General's pool in Kingswood on Saturday November 7th 2007.

Over a hundred swimmers in 25 teams took part this year, swimming over 50 miles for charity. Teams included Rosebery Girls School, Nonsuch Girls School, Collingwood Boys Schooland 7th Cheam Guides.

Funds raised from this month are split between The Children's Trust Tadworth, Rotary charities and the teams' own charities.

Rotary District Conference in Lille - October 2007

Rotary clubs are grouped into districts and Nonsuch Rotary belongs to District 1140 which covers 49 clubs from the south west of London to parts of Surrey and Hampshire.

This year the District conference was held in Lille and a group of members enjoyed a pleasant weekend in this beautiful French city attending the conference.

Nonsuch Rotary's seventh Swimathon is being held on Saturday 3rd November 2007 from 9.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m. at the Legal & General Swimming Pool, Kingswood.

This is a sponsored swimming event and local groups and organisations are invited to submit teams to swim. Funds raised are split three ways: 35% goes to The Childrens' Trust at Tadworth Court, 35% goes to the charity of the swimming team and 30% goes to Rotary Charities.

Big Band in the Park a Great Success

Despite very unpredictable weather the Friends of Nonsuch "Big Band in the Park" concert was a great success.

For some years the Friends (FON) have held a summer jazz concert in the beautiful gardens of Nonsuch Mansion House. But this was the first time Nonsuch Rotary had helped with the organisation. The concert, held on Friday 22nd June, featured The Dave Marrion Big Band who performed a wide range of big band hits including Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey and Count Basie.

Although a "severe weather warning" had been issued the skies remained clear for the concert which was enjoyed by almost 500 local residents. As darkness fell, many of the audience were dancing to the final number - "New York New York" sung by Colin Anthony.

Around £5,000 was raised from the event that will be used to support the FON's work in restoring the Nonsuch Mansion House and the general preservation of the Nonsuch Park Estate as an open space accessible to all.

For some years the Friends of Nonsuch has organised a very successful Jazz Concert in the garden of the Nonsuch Mansion House.

This year Nonsuch Rotary has agreed to support the Friends of Nonsuch in making this special evening even better.

This year’s concert is being held on Friday evening 22nd June and will feature Dave Marrion’s Big Band.

Tickets for this special event will be limited due to the capacity restrictions in the park but will shortly go on sale at £10 each. (Note that any tickets not sold in advance will be on sale on the day of the concert at £12 each).

Rosebery School Support Nonsuch Rotary’s Swimathon

For several years students from Rosebery School in Epsom, guided by PE Teacher Margot Evans, have swum many lengths of the splendid Legal and General pool at Kingswood to raise sponsorship for local charities. This year they raised over £800, which was presented by Prefect Sarah Coopey to David King, President of Nonsuch Rotary at a recent school assembly.

Congratulating the swimmers David said, “Helping others while have fun and exercise is a winning combination. Your efforts will help to make life a lot easier for people who are suffering in one way or another. I hope we will see you in action again at our next Rotary Swimathon in November.”

This Rotary event raised nearly £3,000 altogether, to be divided between the Children’s Trust and various other charities chosen by the 21 participating teams and Rotary.

A portion of the money raised by Rosebery will go to the Brain Stem Tumour Research Project, in memory of fourteen year old Sophie Pollock, a pupil at the school who tragically died from cancer very recently.

The Future of Nonsuch Park

There have been some concerns in the Sutton and Epsom area about the future of Nonsuch Park, after which Nonsuch Rotary Club is named.

Surrey County Council. who technically own the freehold to the park had wanted to "dispose of the Mansion House for development" releasing funds to finance future upkeep of the Park.

On Tuesday 27th February 2007, over 500 local residents attended a meeting of Surrey County Council's Executive who were reviewing their proposals for the park to express their concerns and anger over these proposals.

David Smith, Chief Executive of Epsom & Ewell Borough Council and Clerk to the Nonsuch Park Joint Management Committee, Paul Slaughter , Chairman of Stoneleigh & Orial Residents Association and Paul Burstow, MP for Sutton & Cheam spoke against the Council's proposals.

At least two petitions signed by almost 4,000 residents were also presented to show the strong public feeling against these proposals.

The Leader of the Council, Mr Nick Skellett commented that he had never seen such a large representation concerning a community issue.

The Council agreed to work with the Nonsuch Park Joint Management Committee and the two Boroughs (L B of Sutton and Epsom & Ewell B C) to review their proposals and hoped to have developed a plan acceptable to the local community in the next two months.

After the meeting, whilst feeling positive of the outcome so far, Paul Burstow commented that the battle was not over as Surrey had not withdrawn their plans. It is therefore important for local residents to keep up the pressure and contribute to future discussions about the future of a much loved and valued local amenity.

Winner of Bizz Quizz 2007

Nonsuch Rotary's second Bizz Quizz was held at the Phoenix Club in Epsom on Thursday 22nd February 2007.

11 teams from local organisations enjoyed a Fish & Chip Supper whilst competing for the Bizz Quizz trophy. It was a very close run event with the winning team just streaking ahead on the final round by playing a tactical joker!

The winners were Sophie Millard Costume Jewellery, a small business based in Kingston specialising in the manufacture and hire of costume jewellery to the film and theatrical industry. Sophie Millard, who read about the Quizz in a local paper said "We are so shocked but very pleased to have won thus contest at our first attempt. We have had a very enjoyable evening and will certainly come again".

Nonsuch Rotary run Bizz Quizz to encourage fellowship with local organisations as well as to raise funds for local charities. As with the 2006 Quizz, the profit form the evening will be donated to The Queen Mary's Hospital for Children's Neo Natal Unit Appeal.

Bizz Quizz will be run again in February 2008.

We are pleased to report that this year we have collected just over £9,000 during our Christmas charity collection.

A big thank you to all the residents of Worcester Park, Cheam and Stoneleigh for contributing so generously and for Asda in Sutton, Waitrose in Worcester Park and Sainsbury's in North Cheam for allowing us to collect at their stores during the weekend.

We would also like to thank Kendall Car Hire for again generously providing the lorry for Santa's sleigh!

Christmas is a very busy time for Nonsuch Rotary along with other Rotary clubs in Sutton. This is the time for our major fund raising event for local charities.

From the 2nd to 17th December we will be very visible on the streets of North Cheam, Worcester Park and Stoneleigh - and at the local supermarkets - helping Father Christmas raise much needed funds for local charities.

Last Christmas, the generostity of local residents raised over £9,000 for worthy local causes. This year we are supporting:

Nonsuch Rotary's Swimathon - 4th November

Nonsuch Rotary’s Swimathon has become an annual event that raises funds for Tadworth Court Children’s Trust as well as other local charities. Held on Saturday 4th November it was again hosted by Legal & General at their pool in Kingswood.

This year, in particular, we had teams from Collingwood School, Nonsuch High School for Girls, Rosebery High School for Girls, Sutton Shopmobility and from local Guide Groups and of course from our own Club. 20 teams with 75 swimmers completed a massive 2542 lengths of the 25 meter pool which equated to 63.55 kilometers or 39.5 miles.

The Club is very grateful to everyone who took part. Next year’s Swimathon will be held on 3rd November 2007.

Books for Africa

One of our members, John Goodhead, spent a year in Zambia doing voluntary work in Chipata. Following on from his time Africa, the Club decided to support a project to send a consignment of books to Chipata in cooperation with the local Rotary Club.

Nonsuch contributed £1,000 and obtained Rotary District and Rotary Foundation grants to raise a total of £6,200 to cover the cost of a container of some 24,000 books.

Working with a USA Charity Books for Africa, the consignment is about to leave St. Paul, Minnesota and is scheduled to arrive in Chipata in March 2007.

Without a doubt the books will be of great value to the local schools, colleges and libraries in Chipata and are an excellent example of cross country cooperation between local Rotary Clubs, Rotary Foundation Rotary’s own charity) and third party charitable organisations.

Two of our Club members, John Goodhead and Mick Martin, are planning to be in Chipata when the books arrive in March 2007 and will be able to supervise their distribution to the community.

Chipata is a small and dusty crossroads in the Eastern Province of Zambia, and is a popular refueling station for overlanders on their way east to Malawi, west to South Luangwa National Park, or north to Lundazi. Formerly Fort Jameson, Chipata was the capital of North-Eastern Rhodesia until 1911, when Northern Rhodesia — later to become Zambia — was created. Now it's the capital of Zambia's Eastern Province and a fairly busy town with about 75,000 residents and more coming in daily.

Rotary King Chips In

Why did David King take his club to the Chipstead Golf Club this week to meet Steven Cookson, the Training Professional?

Because David is President of Nonsuch Rotary Club and his Club will meet at Chipstead every Wednesday evening from now on.

After sinking his putt in one, President David said, “We are very much looking forward to making the Golf Club our new home while retaining our close links with the Nonsuch Park area where we began. We are currently helping the local community with over 25 projects and would welcome enquiries from anyone who might like to join us in Rotary.”

Nonsuch Rotary members are drawn from the Boroughs of Sutton, Epsom and Reigate.

Legal & General win first Bizz Quizz (May 2006)

A team from Legal & General was the first winner of Rotary’s Bizz Quizz. Congratulations!

The quiz, organised by The Rotary Club of Sutton Nonsuch was held at The Phoenix Club in Epsom on Thursday 11th May to raise funds for the Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children’s Neo Natal Unit Appeal.

“The aim of the evening was to have some fun whilst raising funds for an excellent cause” said President Colin Kennedy when presenting the Bizz Quizz trophy to Andy Pearson, Captain of the Legal & General Team. “We hope this will become an annual event in the Sutton and Epsom area that will bring together organisations large and small to support a well deserving local charity as well as having a good social evening out”.
